WE’RE BACK! The Little Paper that Could
| After an almost one year hiatus The Iron Otis is back and better than ever! I’m Shona MacIntyre, one of the two Editors in Chief of this fine paper. We took over the paper in September with big dreams of hard hitting engineering journalism and a new age of the paper. But the name The Otis no longer matched the image we wanted for our newspaper. Yes Otis serves as a hero to all bunnies and he has long ago mastered the art of balancing the academic, the social and the total domination of the South Side of Campus. But he is only one bunny. We were looking for a team, and we needed a strong name to show that we were back and we were serious this time. Then it came to us, Iron. Iron Ring, Iron Tool, Iron Bridge, Iron Otis… Throughout folklore iron has represented strength and iron horseshoes were considered lucky; we decided that we’d need both of those. It further reminds us of the Iron Ring, a symbol of the ethics and responsibilities of engineering to which all professional engineers are bound. And Otis was a symbol of where we came from; a school that had been offering engineering programs since 1871; a tradition of excellence in research and teaching which we should all be proud of.
Once we had our name it was time to assemble our team and design our website (theironotis.wordpress.com). Only five brave souls made it to our first little meeting in November but we were ready with treats and ideas. Our first online edition came out a few weeks later with only six articles but they exceeded all our expectations when hundreds of people read them online, finally some results from all our hard work. But we were not satisfied. Our dream was to be a newspaper, a proper paper newspaper so we set our sights higher to one more successful online only edition and then back to paper. The last online only edition came out three weeks ago. The time has finally arrived; our paper dream is coming true. It has been a long road these past five months, planning, talking to people, convincing everyone that this crazy idea could be a reality. Our tiny team has grown to include more than fifteen contributors, two editors and two editors in chief, and it’s always growing. I like to thank all those who have contributed to this paper; the people who have written, worked on layout, helped with the website, taken pictures, gave us much needed advice and encouragement and believed in us. Without all you this paper would not be what it is today.
